Working in Saskatchewan

My summer job at the University of Saskatchewan library deals with cataloging and archiving some important documents from a B.C. Supreme Court case. It’s not the most exciting thing in the world, but some of the material can be rather interesting. Archiving in general is an area I had never thought about much but there are archivists around the world doing the legwork so we can have an accurate idea of history.

The Saskatchewan Council for Archives and Archivists recently completed an online gallery of work images from Saskatchewan. There are lots of great images going back decades. Here are some interesting ones:

“This com-poo-terr machine is a marvel. Feed it a dozen loaves of bread and it will actually write your name for you on a piece of paper! Boy, what are they gonna think of next?”

“Go on, Bobby, just keep chippin’ away at that rock. The three of us will supervise so you don’t hurt yourself. Remember that if you need a break, it’ll come out of your pay.”

“Remember the drill, boys. We throw the horses into the fire and if that doesn’t stop it, we call the police.”

“All right boys, it’s lunchtime. Come on, those horses aren’t gonna eat themselves.

“This is just awful. My grandmother could mix a better batch of cocaine than you. In fact, I’m pretty sure this is cottage cheese.”

“What’s going on? Are you two up to any shenanigans out here? A bank’s reputation is built on how quiet and motionless its staff is, so if I see you two — I saw that Theodore! That’s it, you get another six hours in the cage!”

“Used to be I had to go to the park and expose myself to one or two children at a time. Now with this fancy printing press, I can just leaflet the entire neighbourhood with naked pictures of myself.”

“That’s odd, I can’t find the name anywhere. I’m starting to suspect that “Gofuk Yorself” isn’t even a real name, or maybe it’s been misfiled. Sounds Dutch, whatever it is.

This is Birdemic!

Oh. My. God.

Birdemic: Shock and Terror is likely going to go down as being a better awful movie than even Troll 2. Birdemic was written and directed by James Nguyen, a 42-year-old “mid-level software salesman in Silicon Valley” who doesn’t deny that his movie was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, but Nguyen has added so much more to the killer bird genre. For one thing, the birds in Birdemic can explode.

Trailer

The old cliche is to “write what you know” and Nguyen has made his male lead Rod into a software salesman just like himself. Then there’s Natalie, a beautiful young fashion model driven by… passion. The two of them spend the first half of the movie falling in love. The second half is all about the swarms of birds who inexplicably attack humans, poop acid and explode on impact. Other than that, there seem to be a lot of long panning shots of nothing in particular, just for the sake of panning.

Birdemic will have its Canadian premiere in Toronto on May 20, but the film’s website allows for people to contact the Birdemic crew to get the movie screened in your town. I’m going to start a campaign to get Birdemic to Saskatoon or I will die trying — possibly from bird-related causes.

Here’s a truly awful scene from the movie, complete with terrible special effects. Be warned: the bird noises may deafen you or drive you to madness.

The eagles are coming!

If you are not convinced that this movie is amazing, read this hilarious Toronto Star piece that talks about how the hapless Nguyen made his movie (over four years) and managed to get a distribution deal with Severin Films.

The Huffington Post wants you to be prepared

The Huffington Post had some rotating images on their front page about the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. This screenshot does not make me think of oil so much as a bathroom accident.

No toilet paper? Always be prepared.

TED Talk: James Randi

James Randi is such a quirky old man. After performing as a magician for decades, he turned his attention to debunking quacks, frauds and charlatans. That includes things like alternative medicine, psychics, and all other forms of bullshit.

In this 2007 TED Talk, Randi talks about his foundation and about trying to fight back against pseudoscience — and he does it all while wearing his pants impossibly high.

Power to the web

There is something strangely inspiring about these Google videos — although ads would be a better description. The reason they don’t seem like ads is that most people already use Google search, YouTube, Gmail, Blogger, or any other combination of Google services so frequently that an advertisement for those services makes no sense. No one advertises for oxygen, after all. That’s how all-encompassing some web services have become, and I would include Facebook in that list.

In any case, these Google “ads” are strangely inspirational, empowering even. Weird, I know.

The National

Potholes

Paris Love Affair

There are more videos like these on YouTube but these three were my personal favourites.

Another great headline

Xinhua, the official Chinese news agency, is proving to be a gold mine for great headlines.

Here’s a story about the Philippine government negotiating with a Muslim separatist movement, whose name just so happens to form the acronym MILF.

MILF in the Philippines

Based on the headline, one can’t help but imagine government officials trying to negotiate with an attractive mother whose good looks have unleashed a religious uprising. Something tells me an American or Canadian editor might have caught the MILF thing and taken it out.

Here is another recent Xinhua headline that missed the mark somehow.

Poor translations

Xinhua is the official news agency of the Chinese government. But that doesn’t mean they can’t stink at translations. Observe:

Xinhua

No doubt, the headline is meant to say that the “U.S. shows little patience.” Still, for all those people who fear that China is going to overtake the West and make us sex-slaves, this should be a nice reminder of our dominance. At least in speaking English.

Barack Obama is a robot

Here’s a video of Barack Obama from the recent UN summit. A reception held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for the various delegates shows that Barack Obama has an eerily consistent smile.

It’s almost as though the foreign dignitaries were standing with a cardboard Obama. Or maybe they put their heads through a “Take a picture with the president” scene at the county fair. The person who made the video put together 130 separate photos, all available from the US State Department’s flickr page.

Here’s another of his time lapse videos. This one doesn’t leave you feeling scared about whether the most powerful man in the world is an android.

Finally, some funny Monty Python

Peter Griffin once joked about “the other 178 hours of Monty Python stuff that isn’t funny or memorable.” Not that Family Guy is anything special anymore, but it certainly seems that Monty Python’s reputation is slightly inflated by the group’s many fans.

When old reruns of Monty Python’s Flying Circus are on TV, the jokes are sometimes outdated — comedy doesn’t always age well — but usually the show is just flat-out unfunny. Sure, some of the sketches are cute, but I can’t imagine watching season after season of it.

Still, I just came across this Python sketch about a Robin Hood-like character named Dennis Moore. Thanks to the magic of YouTube, here are parts one and two.

Update: A recent NYTimes piece about the surprising longevity of Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
